5/14/2012 First on the agenda today was to pick up a rental car. We had found the Budget rental office last night, so it was easy to find this morning. It's about the smallest car rental office I've ever seen. We get a Toyota Auris, it's diesel and stick, and of course, the steering wheel is on the wrong side (right side?). I quickly picked up how to drive it and only stalled it a couple of times during the day. Our destination today was Dingle and other interesting things along the way on the Dingle Peninsula. The drive to Dingle was nice and easy with a few round-abouts to navigate. Our first interesting stop was a quick look at Minard Castle. We missed the turn and had to turn around and then the road there was not marked very well but then it popped into view. We weren't allowed to go near it since it was falling apart, but it was nice to see and take pictures and the view of the coastline there was very nice. Finally in Dingle, we made it to a car park and then wandered down the main street to find lunch. Today's lunch was found at John Benny's Pub. They a delicious pan fried hake on the menu and of course another pint of Guinness. After lunch we walked around Dingle a bit more and did a little shopping. I've been looking for a pair of pants and a sweater, but no luck here. We also stopped at Murphy's Ice Cream. I had the Dingle sea salt ice cream and raspberry sorbet, amazingly good. Once done in Dingle we headed further down the coast and stopped at some Bee Hive stone huts. Other stops along the way were mostly to catch the breath taking view of the shore line and neighboring islands. The roads got narrow after Dingle and made driving more difficult. We had at least one close call but no one got hurt. The main loop around the peninsula was called Slea Head Road. That took us through a bunch of small towns and lots of views of the coast and eventually back in to Dingle. On the way back to Killarney we took the road through Connor's Pass. This road led us up and over the mountain with some more gorgeous views of both Dingle and the ocean in the other direction. At one point we saw a small waterfall, didn't seem like much. It ended up that after a nice climb up some boulders there was a good size lake that was feeding the small waterfall. We were all tired at this point, but still about 50km away from the hotel. The road back went through Tralee and some other small towns before getting back to the hotel for a refreshing shower and some relaxation time before dinner.
