No description The flight left Chicago about 11pm. The plane was packed and Dad
and I get the very middle seats. It is very hard to sleep when
you have no room. The movie on the flight was Antitrust, but I fell
asleep before it came on and didn't wake up until the credits
were rolling. The plane we were on was an Airbus A340-300 and went
about 600mph. The flight was about 8.5 hours to Frankfurt. When we
landed in Frankfurt we got off and had to wait in the Customs line
and get our passport stamped. There were only a couple of pairs
of police officers and one police dog. Kinda scary when you think
about it. After customs we went to get our bags and they were already
coming out. Next stop was Avis. They didn't have the Audi A-6
we asked for so we got a Saab 9-5 wagon instead. Just as nice.
We then drove from Frankfurt to Heidelberg were we would spend
two nights. Things to note about the autobahn: 1) There are only
a few places with no speed limit. 2) Lots of expensive cars (Audi,
BMW, Mercedes, Volvos, Volkswagen) and the trucks look really
different. 3) Traffic flows very nicely. 4) The road is very
smooth. The weather here is absolutely gorgeous. Sunny and warm.
After we got to Heidelberg and checked into the Army Guesthouse
we drove into downtown Heidelberg to find some dinner. Downtown
Heidelberg is really beautiful. You can tell immediately that
it's been there a long time. Everything looks fairly old. One nice
thing about driving in Germany is that you get a warning (yellow
light) between red and green. The river in Heidelberg is called
the Nekar River and is used for shipping. One of the pictures is
of an empty barge going down the river. There was a nice park
along the river with lots of people tanning. There were a lot
of nice shops in Heidelberg but they were mostly closed by 7pm.
Dinner was excellent. We ate a nice outdoor cafe. Our table was
on a little hill, so it was a little hard to eat. The menu had
lots of pork dishes on it. After dinner we walked by the castle
an
